Here’s an awesome piece of video – it’s period footage from Egypt circa 1932.
For those of you that know Cairo, this footage show a SHOCKINGLY clean city. Since the brits were in charge then the narration has more than just a whiff of colonial prejudice to it. For example…
“Across the street the Dragoman are always waiting for victims. We say “victims” and if you’ve ever employed one, you know why. As a rule they are walking mines of misinformation, as each tells you that he is the son of a great sheik. If you do not employ one, they all follow you about and bother you.”
…which makes it an even more fascinating glimpse into the past.
The contrast between these shots of colonial Egypt under the British and modern Egypt today is pretty startling.
And it’s terrific to see images from some of my favorite places like The Alley of the Tentmakers, and the Ar Rafai, Sultan Hassan Mosques.
